This year has been a difficult and tragic year for the public safety community. The United States lost over 250 public safety professionals in 2016. These brave and courageous first responders included fire service professionals, law enforcement officers, EMS providers and K9s.

Every first responder knows that the next shift may be their last. When officers strap on their guns, when firefighters gear up, when medics grab treatment bags, when K9s are on duty, they are knowingly risking their personal safety and welfare for the sake of the communities they serve. That risk exists every day of their careers and extends well into retirement years.

The International Public Safety Association serves the entire public safety community. We are heartbroken over this staggering loss and extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the departments, families and friends of the fallen.

As we look ahead to 2017, we will continue to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We must remain strong and vigilant so that at the end of the shift everyone goes home.

If you have a joint Law and Fire/EMS tactical medic program (TEMS), the IPSA wants to hear about it. We recognize there are some great TEMS programs out there, but there is no national repository.

Please complete this very short survey so we can start to build a better understanding about the TEMS programs that currently exist.

Also, if you know of an agency that has a TEMS program, can you please forward this survey to them?

The IPSA kicked off its inaugural event today. Our public safety symposium brought together public safety professionals from around the U.S. and internationally to discuss contemporary issues in public safety. The sessions were an overwhelming success and very well received.

In addition, the IPSA presented its first Leadership Award to Chief Scott Edson with Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and Chair of the IPSA's Board of Directors

Chief Edson has been, and continues to be, instrumental in shaping the IPSA into a professional public safety association that addresses contemporary issues facing all emergency first responders. His time and dedication serving as the IPSA's first Board Chair is recognized and valued by the association's leadership and membership.

Presenting this award to Chief Edson was just phase one.
