In the public safety world, the need to have difficult conversations with your team, colleagues or subordinates will always arise. We all know how important it is to essentially rip off the band-aid and have these conversations in a timely manner, but confronting a co-worker about a performance or job-related issue is also something that most individuals avoid. And, when avoidance occurs, it can lead to low morale or even create a toxic work environment.
Initiating a difficult conversation requires skill and compassion, but most importantly, it requires the courage to do it.
As a leader in your organization it is your responsibility to build your people up and keep them headed in the right direction. This includes having difficult conversations. If they aren’t made aware that something is wrong, they will never have the opportunity to correct the issue.
